My wisdom teeth decided to grow some more this weekend, which meant I binge watched all of Empire. The music of Empire is amazing and the pilot hooks you in with an incredibly talented voice, the owner of which I immediately had to google. She is the incredibly talented V. Bozeman. And as I watched her videos, I felt an incredible pride. She is so immensely talented that you can't possibly deny it. Her videos and her voice are so incredibly powerful...just listen
As I watched her videos, I was very much reminded of another completely different musician who also made me feel that same pride, the ever talented Brymo. I will never forget grabbing an acquaintance after a particularly discomfitting Civ lecture, and making her watch Brymo's Ara. The lecture itself is a long story, suffice it to say, I was expected to comment, with gravitas, on a (very small) culture and music I knew nothing about because I was one of the (very few) Africans in the class. I'm sure that girl thinks back to that moment of standing out in the cold Chicago spring for 3 minutes watching Ara and has decided that I'm crazy. I know why I did it. I did it because I could comment with a college's student's put-on gravitas, I understood his music. But most of all, I am proud of it.
